Last summer I visited the exhibition “Lothar Wolleh sees Jan Schoonhoven” in the De Prinsenhof museum in Delft. This was my first introduction to the work of Lothar Wolleh (1930-1979). Wolleh is best known for his characterful portraits of avant-garde artists from the 1960s. His photos, taken with a Hasselblad camera, are always square, in black and white and with a thick black border. The use of strong contrasts is also characteristic of his work. Wolleh was friends with the Delft artist Jan Schoonhoven and also regularly visited him in his hometown of Delft. The portraits that Wolleh made of Schoonhoven in Delft are the subject of the exhibition that can be seen in De Prinsenhof until January 7, 2024. The exhibition and the associated photo competition (no, I didn't win anything) gave me the idea to make a series of photos of Delft, inspired by the photos that Lothar Wolleh took of Jan Schoonhoven in Delft. Instead of portraits, I took street photos with passers-by as walk-ons. In this blog you can see the photo series that resulted from this.
